We’re always glad to welcome new members, whether you are an old hand or someone with an unresolved urge to get involved in entertainment you will find us a friendly group with a wealth of experience to pass on.
(Since that article Kirsty has got even more involved by joining the CDS committee!)
Whether you want to watch some good shows or help creating them we’d love to hear from you!
You don’t need to live in Cuckfield, (but it helps!)
We have active members from across the wider Mid-Sussex area, such as from Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and Hassocks, as well as other local villages.
Membership – For Actors and Non-Actors
We have many members who attend and/or help with club events but who do not act at all (least ways not on the stage!).
Prompting (not that our actors ever need it!) is surprisingly popular, as while it means attending rehearsals there are no lines to learn, but like the director and cast the prompt gets to see and help the show evolve and reach its peak on performance nights.
Involvement in the society can expand your social life and introduce you to other parts of the village such as the Independent State of Cuckfield. (We number at least two society stalwarts in the list of previous mayors and supporter and stage manager Ross Bradshaw has run as the official CDS candidate!). You can find out more about our beautiful village (and its several pubs) at Cuckfield.org.
Some non-acting members like to get involved with less time consuming roles such as backstage and front of house, (for example helping to run the bar is critical and is only second to tickets sales!).
Also there are activities, including scenery build and painting, wardrobe management and prop manufacture, which can often be very flexible in terms of time scheduling.
Most flexible of all (if perhaps hardest) we have had some members who have written original sketches or short plays.
Society activities are not just limited to rehearsals and productions, we also hold club nights, which are a mix of entertainment and socialising.
Past club nights have included items such as play or poetry readings, improvisation games (for those ready to have a go), workshops in public speaking, directing and other theatre related social events.
Why not come along to a club night as a guest, and see what we do?
However our annual membership is a very reasonable £10 per person, or £15 for a family or just £5 for Students and Seniors.
Whether you become a member or not you should subscribe to our mailing list as a Friend of CDS to get occasional updates on our activities and shows.
Friends are our supporters who get our email newsletters about shows and other events. It costs nothing! So you can’t get better value than that!
But you may be tempted to get involved with our social activities or supporting shows! We also often pass on information about other nearby drama societies when they have shows or auditions.
(Go on, we promise not to sell or give away your email address, and you can opt out at any time!)
If are only interested in supporting us by coming to see CDS productions and want to make sure you hear about future show dates and when tickets go on sale then you can then subscribe to our mailing list for Audience Updates only.
People on this section of the email list will get minimal number of newsletters,
(Again we promise not to sell or give away your email address, and you can opt out at any time!)
(Members and Friends can also get audience emails by adjusting their preferences – but they will usually know all the information in advance anyway!)
